Precisely how rock ‘n’ roll got its identify probably never will probably be definitively answered, but there will be little doubt that it entered fashionable utilization because of a disc jockey named Alan Freed, a “wild, grasping and dangerous man” who was, in the mid 1950s, “the dominant nighttime personality on radio in New York Metropolis.” Almost precisely half a century ago he changed the title of his present to “Rock ‘n’ Roll Dance Party” and began to plug the music of black rhythm-and-blues performers as well as the younger whites who started to copy and reinterpret their work. That is considered the primary “concept album.” Subsequent products of this pattern have been rock musicals corresponding to Hair (1968) and rock operas like Tommy, composed and sung by the Who. But quickly after, as the Stones played a different pageant in Altamont, California , a younger black attendee was murdered by Hell’s Angels bikers who had foolishly been hired to guard the stage.
